About Study Phrasal Verbs

Study Phrasal Verbs is a free place to learn what English phrasal verbs mean in a sentence and practise recognising them. You can start with a topic you need or explore expressions built around a verb such as get or take.

What you can learn

The site has 20 topic packs, with 272 learning entries covering 208 expressions. Each entry focuses on one meaning. For example, the Make pack has three entries for make up: invent a story, put something together, and become friends again after an argument.

You get a short explanation and an example sentence, followed by a version that replaces the expression with plain English. The 5 grammar guides explain patterns such as where to put an object and when a pronoun must go between the verb and its particle.

How practice works

The exercises use multiple-choice questions. You can choose the meaning of a highlighted expression, find the expression that matches a paraphrase, or choose words to replace it. Check each answer as you go, then review your results at the end of the round.

You do not need an account. Your saved progress stays in the browser you use, so it does not follow you to another device and can be lost if you clear your browser data.

About the explanations

The explanations focus on the meaning used in each example. An expression may have other meanings that are not covered in that entry. AI tools helped write the topic introductions, usage notes, common mistakes and FAQs.

Found a mistake?

If an answer seems wrong or an explanation is unclear, please tell us through the feedback form at the end of a practice round or on the contact page. Include the topic and expression so we can find the example you mean.

Keeping the site free
